Date Fished: 07/08/03
Lake Mamie (Mammoth Lakes) - I went float tubing in the early evening at Lake Mamie. The fishing in the area proved to be quite slow in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Maybe the winds, warm water temperatures and the onslaught of fisherman over the Fourth of July weekend had something to do with the difficulty in catching fish. I spot fished various locations on the lake, from the deepest portions to the shallows. I once again fished with an olive matuka variation, with a prince nymph as a dropper. Fishing in the shallows proved to be the most fun. I landed a handful of brook and rainbow trout, ranging in size from five to eight inches. Trolling back towards the north end of the lake, I caught my dinner for the evening, a 14 inch rainbow. What a thrill to have my fly attacked aggressively after a couple of days of lackluster fishing. An added thrill to the evening was a black bear that decided to delay my exit from the lake. I estimate that he or she was about a year old. He seemed to be fishing and rummaging around the shore in search of some dinner for himself.
